I'm a young singer/songwriter whose recently gotten a spec deal with a major producer. I'm trying to put together an intelligent, diverse and experienced band for an album that may begin recording as early as the fall.
I'm looking for bass, a variety of percussion, and keyboard/sampling. Anyone with a variety of world music knowledge would be preferred, but not completely necessary. Someone who could help me arrange for horn/string would also be appreciated.
I sing lead vocals and play acoustic/electric guitar that blends between lead and rhythm. I love Paul Simon (especially newer), Randy Newman, jazz standards, Elvis Costello & The Imposters, They Might Be Giants, Elton John, Rheostatics, Mary Margaret O'Hara, Art Of Noise, Queen (and I have qualities of all of them in my songs), so an ability to improvise effectively and play with a nuanced sense of rhythm is a MUST.
I can provide chord/lyric charts and do my best to communicate with you (with various melodies written out), but finely tuned instincts are a must. I have a history with eccentric, improvised music, and so I want to be able to incorporate that into my sound. There's a charm that people can only feel when something is improvised.
I can pay (pretty) well, but what I'm more interested in is finding musicians that are willing to commit to this because they believe in it. I want to be able to tour easily with my songs and be able to jam well on stage with you.
(If you could assist with the album, but not with touring, that's understandable, since that's another large commitment).
I believe some of the songs I've been writing of late have hit potential, and could speak to a large and untapped facet of my generation that aren't so interested in monotone techno melodies, indecipherable folk & contrived pop music that sedates you as you buy your groceries.
There's a segment of my generation (and many baby boomers) that are more interested in embracing the sensitivity and variety of 20th century popular music. They're just waiting for groups to help evolve those ideas in such a way that they can have a real place in the popular spectrum again. We could be one of those groups that achieves this, and have a mountain of fun at the same time.
Please send me an email with a link to some of your playing & something creative you've done that you're very proud of. The latter doesn't necessarily have to be musical.
If you don't hear back from me, please understand that this is a very careful, somewhat mysterious process, and don't take it personally.
Hope to hear from you. If you have any specific questions, feel free to send them my way. And yes, I can send you links to some of my music.
